Sketching astronomical objects

This site is dedicated to my astronomical drawings. Sketching deep-sky objects helps to improve observing skills. Over time - my technique should become better...

Messier, Herschel and Caldwell in Com
Thursday, 22 May 2008
Still testing star maps, I decided to look for objects in the Coma Berenices constellation marked with M, C and H.

M53

It is not easy to sketch globular clusters, this is my second try on M53...

M53 - Globular Cluster in Coma Berenices

M64 - "The Black Eye Galaxy"

This time i DID saw the famous black spot after a few minutes of indirect seeing! The center is very bright and leaves a stellar impression.

 M64 - Black Eye Galaxy

NGC4494 / Herschel 251

Yet another bright galaxy leaving a stellar impression.

NGC4494 - Galaxie in Coma Berenices

NGC4559 / Caldwell 36

Much fainter as the other galaxies tonight, it's also missing a bright center. Two stars shining in the object.

NGC4559 - Galaxie in Coma Berenices

NGC4565 / Caldwell 38

Okay, I already sketched this one a few years ago, but it's a beauty - I just can't resist to observe it over and over again. Note the faint star (12m8) underneath the galaxy.

NGC4565 - Galaxie in Coma Berenices

NGC4725 / Herschel 277

Bright, almost stellar center with fainter outer regions.

Galaxy hunting in CVn
Thursday, 08 May 2008
Finally the wetter and my work allowed me to sketch again. I took the opportunity to test some new star maps and to hunt galaxies in the Canes Venatici constellation.

M94

I started with M94, a pretty bright and easy to see galaxy. It appeared as a round and almost stellar object.

M94 - Galaxy in Canes Venatici

M106

Another bright galaxy with an almost stellar central region.

M106 - Another galaxy in Canes Venatici

NGC4490 and NGC4485

A beautiful duo observed under good conditions...

NGC4490 and NGC4485 - Pair of galaxies in Canes Venatici

NGC4631 and NGC4656: The Whale galaxy

NGC4631 is also known as the "Whale galaxy" or Caldwell 32. Bright and with a clear fish-shaped structure. NGC4656 is much fainter. A beautiful star chain can be observed between both objects.

NGC4631 - The Whale galaxy and its companion NGC4485

M104 - Sombrero Galaxy
Saturday, 14 April 2007
Another galaxy jewel could be observed:

M104 - Sombrero Galaxy

M51 + NGC5195 - Whirlpool Galaxy
Friday, 13 April 2007
I sketched this beautiful duo under pretty good conditions. I could not really see the energy flow between them but indirectly a diffuse cloud and a star within M51 could be observed.

M51 + NGC5195 - Whirlpool Galaxy

M65 + M66 + NGC3628 - Galaxy triplet
Friday, 13 April 2007
Spring is galaxy time... This week the weather is unusually warm for the time of the year but for galaxy hunting... just what we need ;-)
